The Brazilian Financial System and the Green Economy: Alignment with Sustainable Development

Conductec by the Center for Sustainability Studies of FGV-EAESP (GVces), this study is one of the United Nations Development Programme (UNEP) initiatives, which has been promoted in several countries and has the participation of FEBRABAN in Brazil. Its objective is to identify factors that may stimulate the channeling of capitals intermediated by the financial sector to the green economy. This document is the first contribution of the Brazilain financial sector, represented by FEBRABAN to the United Nations.

The publication is based on three studies. The fisrt examines the legislative and regulatory environments, and public policies that adress social and environmental issues related to the financial sector. The second study presents an initial survey of the amounts already allocated by the financial sector to the green economy and proposes a methodology to identify and monitor this flow of resources. Finally, the third study examines two important segments of the Brazilian economy and its transition to a green economy: renewable energy and agriculture.
